The eating habits of Brazilians

Research by the IBGE reveals the eating habits of Brazilians: less fruit and fewer vegetables and more sugary food, such as cookies and soda

At the end of last year the IBGE released the results of a survey of the eating habits of Brazilians. Compared with the same survey done in the 1970s, the IBGE has said that currently Brazilians are consuming much more sugary food (such as desserts, cookies, sodas, etc.) than before. Worse still, people are eating less fruit and fewer vegetables (which are important for a healthy life) than they should. According to the IBGE, the consumption of cookies and soda increased 400% on the 1970s...

sugary food – alimento açucarado (doce)

Piercing and tattoing

Piercing and tattooing: the price to pay

Decorating their own bodies might make people feel “modern” and “different”, but it can also bring with it problems....

As you know, when a person goes for piercing, he or she makes a hole in part of his or her body (generally outlandish places) to put a type of ring in. Generally, piercing is more common among youths. While for some youths piercing and tattooing are used to demonstrate rebellion, for others it signifies a feeling of being “modern” and “different”. But there are also people who decorate their bodies because they find it beautiful. However, research published recently on the internet showed that 60% of youths adopting piercing or tattooing regret it later. As time passes, many of these people begin to feel some form of discomfort. Others start to realize, on becoming adults, that important sectors of society do not look favorably on piercing or tattooing. And, worse than this, there are many companies who prefer not to hire professionals who have decorated themselves.

Vocabulary
body - corpo
to bring with – provocar
hole – buraco
outlandish – estranho / exótico
ring – anel
to regret – lamentar / arrepender
later – mais tarde
to realize – compreender
worse - pior

Life in Pantanal

The spectacular life in Pantanal

Stunning landscapes and lots of species of birds, fish and mammals. These are some of the attractions of Pantanal, one of the world’s most beautiful regions
The dream of any tourist going to Pantanal is to see a jaguar and, if possible, take a photograph - but this is a very rare event. Jaguars live in hiding in the forests. However, many other animals can be seen up close, such as alligators, tapirs (antas), capivaras and otters (ariranhas). Bird spotting is also easy for tourists. Birds such as the macaw (arara), toucan and stalks (tuiuiú), which is the symbol of Pantanal. The beauty of this region is also evident in the rivers, lakes, lagoons, and the great variety of plants, trees and other forms of vegetation. Tourists can see the beauty of the region in a traditional boat from the area, called a “chalana”. Pantanal also has fantastic places to go fishing and horse riding.

English Language: the present scene

Today's search for information and need for global communication have already promoted English from being the language of the American, the British, the Irish, the Australian, the New Zealand, the Canadian, the Caribbean, and the South African peoples to being the international language. While portuguese is spoken in 4 countries by approximately 195 million people, English is spoken as a native language by nearly four hundred million people and has become a lingua franca, the Latin of the modern world, "spoken in every continent by approximately eight hundred million people" (Todd iv).
More radical estimates, which include speakers with a lower level of language fluency and awareness, have suggested that the overall total is these days well in excess of 1,000 million.
In addition, it is estimated that 75 percent of all international communication in writing, 80 percent of all information in the world's computers, and 90 percent of Internet content are in English.
In its role as a global language, English has become one of the most important academic and professional tools. The English language is recognized as undoubtedly the most important language for the increasingly mobile international community to learn. This is a fact that seems to be irreversible. English has become the official language of the business and scientific worlds.
